Proposed changes to Skilled Occupations List - March 2020 update

In December 2019, the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business (Department) commenced a review of the Skilled Occupations List.

The submission period has now closed and the next step for the Department is to analyse the submissions received, including any data and evidence provided, to inform its advice to the Government. The Department updates its advice to the Government as appropriate after taking into account stakeholder evidence and further analysis. These results will be then provided to the Government and the final decision as to the proposed changes will be announced by the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs.


It is not yet known when these changes will be announced and when these will take effect. However, it is anticipated that it may already happen in March 2020.

The following occupations are flagged to be removed from the skilled occupation list completely:

  • Careers Counsellor

  • Vehicle Trimmer

  • Business Machine Mechanic

  • Animal Attendants and Trainers nec

  • Gardener (General)

  • Hairdresser

  • Wood Machinist

  • Community Worker

  • Diving Instructor (Open Water)

  • Gymnastics Coach or Instructor


The following occupations are flagged to be moved to the STSOL:

  • Automotive Electrician (currently MLTSSL)

  • Motorcycle Mechanic (currently MLTSSL)

  • Locksmith (currently MLTSSL)

  • Painting Trades Worker (currently MLTSSL)

  • Glazier (currently MLTSSL)

  • Wall and floor tiler (currently MLTSSL)

  • Cabinetmaker (currently MLTSSL)

  • Post Office Manager (currently ROL)

  • Mechanical Engineering Draftsperson (currently ROL)

  • Real Estate Representative (currently ROL)


The following occupations are flagged to be moved to the ROL:

  • Geologist (currently STSOL)


The following occupations are flagged to be moved from the STSOL / ROL to the MLTSSL:

  • Sales and Marketing Manager (salary must be at least $120,000)

  • ICT Project Manager (includes Blockchain planner/Manager) (salary at least $120,000)

  • Information and Organisation Professionals nec (includes Data Scientist) (salary at least $90,000)

  • Insurance Loss Adjuster (salary at least $80,000)

  • Procurement Manager

  • Ship’s Master


The following occupations are flagged to be included on the STSOL list (these are currently not on any of the lists):

  • Corporate Treasurer

  • Aged or Disabled Carer (skills assessment required)

  • Nursing Support Worker (skills assessment required)

  • Personal Care Assistant (skills assessment required)


The following occupations are staying on their current list but have been recommended for a salary caveat (i.e. a minimum salary requirement):

  • Poultry Farmer – STSOL – salary caveat of $65,000

  • Baker – STSOL – salary caveat of $65,000

  • Pastrycook – STSOL – salary caveat of $65,000

  • Horse Trainer – MLTSSL – salary caveat of $65,000

  • Fitter and Turner – MLTSSL – salary caveat of $65,000

  • Sports persons nec – STSOL – salary caveat of $120,000
