Changes to Skilled Occupation List

On 11 March 2019, the Department of Home Affairs made changes to the Skilled Occupations List.

The changes included:

  • adding 36 occupations to the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL);

  • removing 27 occupations from the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL);

  • adding 18 occupations to the Regional Occupation List (ROL);

  • changing occupational caveats; and

  • changing the assessing authorities for some occupations.


Some of the occupations that were added to the Skilled Occupations List include:

  • Biochemist

  • Chemist

  • Food Technologist

  • Environmental Manager

  • Environmental Consultant

  • Environmental Research Scientist

  • Environmental Scientist (nec)

  • Life Scientist (general)

  • Deer Farmer

  • Goat Farmer

  • Etc


The changes may affect applicants who are looking at applying for any of the following visas:

  • Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485);

  • Training visa (subclass 407);

  • Employer Sponsorship (visa subclasses 482, 186 and 187); or

  • General Skilled Migration (visa subclasses 189, 190 and 489).


The new list and conditions commenced as of 11 March 2019 and will apply for all nominations and visa applications lodged after this date.
